- Callum McSwain, a friend of the Colters, who has lost his wife, his homestead, and most of his nerve.
- Pontius Pilate, a huge black frontiersman and fugitive slave, who defends his freedom and avenges the death of a friend.
- Israel Coffman, a frontier preacher who brought faith to a godless land but must now face his own crisis of faith.
